BBC presenter Michael Ball, 63, has turned to social media to announce the heartbreaking news of his mum’s death. Ruth Parry Ball, died at the age of 91.

The entertainer shared a poignant photograph of his treasured mother alongside a brief message: “Ruth Parry Ball 1934-2025 x.” His 158,000 supporters quickly responded with sympathy and words of comfort. One supporter commented: “Oh Michael! I am so sorry to hear this news and so sorry for your loss.

“My deepest condolences to you and all the family.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you.”, reports the Mirror.

Another responded: “Condolences Michael, my Mother was the most important person in my life. Always there in heart and mind.”

Meanwhile, a third remarked: “What a beautiful photo. So sorry for your loss.”

Another noted: “Sorry for your loss, Michael. She must have been massively proud of you.”

Michael, who assumed hosting duties of the new Sunday Love Songs programme on BBC Radio 2 following Steve Wright’s death last year, frequently used social media to post intimate glimpses featuring his mum.

Using Facebook, the performer revealed they marked her 90th birthday at Wales’s fastest zipline.

He posted: “We celebrated my dear mum’s 90th birthday this past weekend with a trip to Wales with the whole family.

“What did we get up to, I hear you ask – well we took a 90 year old on the fastest zipline in the world of course! M x”

Hailing from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Michael’s dad is English while his mother is Welsh.

His dad, Tony Ball, who later received an MBE for services to the industry through his position as head of global sales at British Leyland, was passionate about theatre and would take Michael to see productions during the school holidays.

The performer also marked his dad’s 90th birthday last year.

Michael has been with partner Cathy McGowan since the 1980s, though he has previously opened up about his personal heartbreak, explaining why he would never experience the joy of becoming a father.

The performer, famous for his parts in Les Miserables and Aspects Of Love, revealed that a terrible accident during his teenage years led to serious injuries when a charity parachute jump went tragically wrong.

“I was going to earth at four times the speed I was meant to and got dragged along the floor,” he explained, describing the devastating incident.
